IELTS Cambridge 21 – Test 1: Speaking Part 2
Describe a time when you used information for tourists, for example from a guidebook or online. You should say:
And explain whether this information was very helpful for you. |
Speaking answer
A memorable time when I used tourist information was when I travelled to Bangkok, Thailand, to attend a BTS concert. Since it was my first time visiting the city, I wanted everything to go as smoothly as possible, so I did quite a bit of research online before the trip.
Most of the information I found was about Bangkok itself, especially the area around the concert venue, the Rajamangala Stadium. I read travel guides and tips on different social media platforms, and checked Google Maps to learn about public transportation, the fastest route to the venue, nearby hotels, and must-see attractions. I also looked up opening hours, ticket prices, and local food recommendations, so I could fit some sightseeing into my schedule.
All of this information came in really handy. For example, I learned that taking the BTS Skytrain was much faster than traveling by taxi because Bangkok is well known for its heavy traffic. Thanks to that advice, I arrived at the concert venue early enough to transfer the physical tickets, buy some merchandise and avoid the huge crowds outside. I also followed a suggested one-day itinerary, which allowed me to visit the Grand Palace and enjoy some delicious street food before the concert.
Overall, I think the information was extremely valuable because it helped me plan my itinerary, make informed decisions, and make the most of my trip. Instead of wasting time getting lost or waiting in traffic, I could focus on enjoying both the city and the concert. Looking back, I don’t think the trip would have been nearly as enjoyable without all the tourist information I found beforehand.

IELTS Cambridge 21 – Test 1: Speaking Part 3
1. What are the most popular kinds of holidays for people from your country to go on?
Speaking Answer
I’d say beach holidays with totally green natural landscapes are the most popular because they give people a chance to switch off and escape the pressures of everyday life. That said, younger people are increasingly drawn to city breaks, where they can immerse themselves in the local culture and sample regional cuisine. Overall, I think people are looking for holidays that help them either recharge or experience something completely different from their daily routine.
- Switch off /swɪtʃ ɒf/ (phrasal verb) – thư giãn, tạm gác mọi lo toan
- Be drawn to /bi drɔːn tə/ (verb phrase) – bị thu hút bởI
- Immerse oneself in the local culture /ɪˈmɜːs wʌnˈself ɪn ðə ˈləʊkl ˈkʌltʃə/ (verb phrase) – đắm mình vào văn hóa địa phương
- Sample regional cuisine /ˈsɑːmpl ˈriːdʒənl kwɪˈziːn/ (verb phrase) – thưởng thức ẩm thực vùng miền
2. Do you think most people prefer to have a holiday abroad rather than in their own country?
Speaking Answer
I think many people would prefer to travel abroad if they have the time and budget because it’s an opportunity to experience a different culture and step outside their comfort zone. However, domestic holidays are often more practical since they’re cheaper and easier to plan. So, I think the choice largely depends on people’s finances and the amount of time they have available.
- Domestic holiday /dəˈmestɪk ˈhɒlədeɪ/ (noun phrase) – kỳ nghỉ trong nước
- Step outside your comfort zone /step ˌaʊtˈsaɪd jɔː ˈkʌmfət zəʊn/ (verb phrase) – bước ra khỏi vùng an toàn
- Finances /ˈfaɪnænsɪz/ (noun) – tình hình tài chính
- Available /əˈveɪləbl/ (adverb) – sẵn có
3. Why do some people want to do absolutely nothing when they go away on holiday?
Speaking Answer
I think many people lead fast-paced lives, so they see holidays as a chance to switch off and recharge their batteries. Instead of following a busy schedule, they simply want to take it easy and enjoy some peace and quiet. For them, a relaxing holiday is the ideal way to reduce stress and return to work feeling refreshed.
- Fast-paced life /ˌfɑːst ˈpeɪst laɪf/ (noun phrase) – cuộc sống nhịp độ nhanh
- Switch off /swɪtʃ ɒf/ (phrasal verb) – thư giãn, tạm gác mọi lo toan
- Recharge your batteries /ˌriːˈtʃɑːdʒ jɔː ˈbætəriz/ (idiom) – nạp lại năng lượng
- Take it easy /teɪk ɪt ˈiːzi/ (idiom) – thư giãn, không làm gì vất vả
4. What are the kinds of tourist attractions that visitors to your country like to see?
Speaking Answer
I think most visitors are attracted to historical landmarks and natural attractions because they reflect the country’s culture and scenery. Many tourists also enjoy local markets and street food areas, where they can experience the local way of life. In my opinion, it’s this combination of history, nature, and food that makes the country appealing.
- Historical landmark /hɪˈstɒrɪkl ˈlændmɑːk/ (noun phrase) – di tích lịch sử
- Natural attraction /ˈnætʃrəl əˈtrækʃən/ (noun phrase) – thắng cảnh thiên nhiên
- Reflect the country’s culture /rɪˈflekt ðə ˈkʌntriz ˈkʌltʃə/ (verb phrase) – phản ánh văn hóa của đất nước
- Appealing /əˈpiːlɪŋ/ (adjective) – hấp dẫn, thu hút
5. Do you think tourist attractions such as museums should be free for local people to visit?
Speaking Answer
From my perspective, local people should either have free admission or pay a reduced fee because museums help them learn about their cultural heritage. If tickets are too expensive, many families may be discouraged from visiting. Making museums more accessible could also encourage more people to develop an interest in history and culture.
- Free admission /friː ədˈmɪʃən/ (noun phrase) – vào cửa miễn phí
- Reduced fee /rɪˈdjuːst fiː/ (noun phrase) – mức phí giảm
- Cultural heritage /ˈkʌltʃərəl ˈherɪtɪdʒ/ (verb phrase) – di sản văn hóa
- Be discouraged from doing something /bi dɪˈskʌrɪdʒd frəm ˈduːɪŋ ˈsʌmθɪŋ/ (verb phrase) – nản lòng, không muốn làm gì
- Make something more accessible /meɪk ˈsʌmθɪŋ mɔːr əkˈsesəbl/ (verb phrase) – làm cho điều gì dễ tiếp cận hơn
6. What can make a tourist attraction disappointing for visitors?
Speaking Answer
I think a tourist attraction can be disappointing if it fails to live up to expectations. For example, it might be overcrowded, poorly maintained, or look very exaggerated as compared to the shared photos people have seen online. When that happens, visitors often feel that the experience wasn’t worth the time or money.
- Fail to live up to expectations /feɪl tə lɪv ʌp tə ˌekspekˈteɪʃənz/ (verb phrase) – không đáp ứng được kỳ vọng
- Overcrowded /ˌəʊvəˈkraʊdɪd/ (adjective) – quá đông đúc
- Poorly maintained /ˈpɔːli meɪnˈteɪnd/ (adjective phrase) – bảo trì, giữ gìn kém
- Worth the time or money /wɜːθ ðə taɪm ɔː ˈmʌni/ (adjective phrase) – đáng thời gian hoặc tiền bạc
