In the contemporary job market, there is an opinion that universities should incorporate internships or study abroad programs into their bachelor’s degrees. While this approach presents certain financial and academic challenges, I believe that the practical benefits it offers to students are far more significant.
Two of the main concerns regarding this approach are financial limitations and disruptions in the course’s curriculum. Financially, studying in another country without a scholarship can cost a large sum of money, which may exclude students from low-income backgrounds. Even when interning at local companies, the stipends provided might be insufficient to cover additional expenses such as transportation, professional attire, and accommodation. Secondly, prolonged periods away from formal instruction can hinder the continuity of learning, making it more challenging for students to retain theoretical knowledge and readjust themselves into an academic environment upon returning to university. For example, an engineering student returning from a six-month industrial placement may struggle to keep pace with academically demanding coursework due to an extended interruption in formal study.
Despite these disadvantages, the perks of adding hands-on industry exposure or sending learners to their global counterparts in undergraduate courses ultimately outshine the aforementioned drawbacks. First, exposure to real-world work environments allows students to acquire first-hand experiences and skills that employers value. They can learn to adapt to a standard working environment as well as how to apply theoretical knowledge into their position at work and thus optimize their expertise. Furthermore, working as interns for international firms helps students acquire the industrial essence of different countries in the world, which expands their vision and prepares them better for a globalized economy. .
In conclusion, although there are valid concerns about the negative impacts of mandatory overseas study or work placements on students’ financial availability and the continuity of the learning outcome, the idea of using global integration as a springboard to cultivate students’ professional capability can enhance students’ future career prospects.
