Để làm tốt bài tập đặt câu hỏi cho từ gạch chân, bước đầu tiên và quan trọng nhất là bạn phải nắm được từ để hỏi phù hợp. Dưới đây là bảng hệ thống các loại từ để hỏi (Wh-questions) và chức năng chính:

Cấu trúc câu hỏi Yes/No và cách biến đổi từ câu khẳng định
Nếu phần gạch chân bao hàm toàn bộ câu hoặc nhấn mạnh tính xác thực của hành động, bạn nên sử dụng câu hỏi Yes/No. Dưới đây là bảng cấu trúc câu hỏi Yes/No của các thì động từ:

Để xử lý dạng bài tập đặt câu hỏi cho từ gạch chân, dưới đây là từng bước thực hiện:
| Bước 1: Phân tích thông tin được gạch chân (loại từ, vai trò ngữ pháp) |
Bạn cần tự vấn: “Thông tin gạch chân này là gì?”
- Nếu là “in the morning” -> Thời gian → Câu hỏi với “When”.
- Nếu là “my mother” -> Người → Câu hỏi với “Who”.
Bài tập: Hoa usually has breakfast at 7 AM.
→ Phần được gạch chân trong câu trên là “at 7 AM” → Thời gian
| Bước 2: Chọn từ để hỏi phù hợp nhất với thông tin đã phân tích |
Dựa vào bảng Wh-questions ở mục trên để chọn từ tương ứng (When, How, Who…).
Bài tập: Hoa usually has breakfast at 7 AM.
→ Phần được gạch chân trong câu trên là “at 7 AM” → Thời gian → Câu hỏi với “When”.
| Bước 3: Xác định thì, chủ ngữ và động từ chính của câu gốc |
Đây là bước quan trọng nhất. Bạn cần phải xác định câu gốc đang ở thì hiện tại đơn, quá khứ đơn hay tương lai để chọn trợ động từ (do, does, did, will, have/has) cho chính xác.
Bài tập: Hoa usually has breakfast at 7 AM.
→ Phần được gạch chân trong câu trên là “at 7 AM” → Thời gian → Câu hỏi với “When”.
Câu trên sử dụng thì hiện tại đơn, vậy nên câu hỏi cũng sử dụng ở thì hiện tại đơn.
| Bước 4: Áp dụng cấu trúc câu hỏi tương ứng (Wh-word + Auxiliary + S + V…) |
Lắp ráp các thành phần đã xác định ở Bước 2 và 3 vào cấu trúc.
Quy tắc chung về thứ tự từ và trợ động từ khi đặt câu hỏi cho phần gạch chân:
Wh-word + Trợ động từ (Auxiliary) + Chủ ngữ (S) + Động từ chính (V) + (O/Trạng từ)?
Lưu ý:
- Nếu từ để hỏi là Chủ ngữ (Who/What làm chủ ngữ), chúng ta không dùng trợ động từ mà chia động từ theo đúng thì của câu gốc.
- Trợ động từ phải hòa hợp với Chủ ngữ và Thì của câu.
- Khi đã có trợ động từ “do/does/did”, động từ chính phải đưa về dạng nguyên mẫu (V-inf).
- Bắt buộc phải bỏ phần gạch chân ra khỏi câu hỏi.
- Kiểm tra dấu chấm hỏi (?) ở cuối câu.

Các lỗi thường gặp khi đặt câu hỏi cho phần gạch chân
1- Lỗi không lược bỏ phần gạch chân khỏi câu hỏi
Phần gạch chân chính là câu trả lời. Nếu bạn đưa nó vào câu hỏi, câu hỏi đó sẽ trở nên vô nghĩa.
- Lỗi: Why did you go to school because you wanted to learn?
- Khắc phục: Bỏ hoàn toàn phần “because you wanted to learn”.
2- Lỗi sai thì hoặc dùng nhầm trợ động từ
Nhiều bạn dùng “do” cho chủ ngữ số ít hoặc dùng “do” cho câu ở thì quá khứ.
- Lỗi: Where do she live? (Sai vì ‘she’ đi với ‘does’).
- Khắc phục: Luôn kiểm tra chủ ngữ trước khi viết trợ động từ.
3- Lỗi chọn sai từ để hỏi hoặc cấu trúc không phù hợp
Nhầm lẫn giữa “How long” (bao lâu) và “How often” (bao lâu một lần) là lỗi phổ biến nhất.
- Mẹo: Nếu thấy “for + khoảng thời gian” -> dùng How long. Nếu thấy “every…”, “once/twice a week” -> dùng How often.
4- Lỗi về thứ tự từ trong câu hỏi
Quên đảo ngữ là lỗi của những người mới bắt đầu.
- Lỗi: What you are doing?
- Khắc phục: Đưa “are” lên trước chủ ngữ “you” -> What are you doing?
