1. When it happened – Bạn nhận chiếc bánh khi nào?

Ở phần mở đầu, bạn cần đưa ra thời điểm cụ thể và hoàn cảnh rõ ràng.

Hãy tránh nói mơ hồ như “a long time ago” hay “when I was a child” (quá chung chung).

Thay vào đó, hãy gắn chiếc bánh với một dịp đặc biệt, ví dụ: Sinh nhật (birthday), tốt nghiệp (graduation), sau một kỳ thi quan trọng (after an important exam), Lễ Tết, Giáng sinh, ngày kỉ niệm (New Year, Christmas, anniversary)

3. Who you got the cake from – Ai là người tặng bạn chiếc bánh?

4. Why it’s a special cake – Vì sao chiếc bánh này đặc biệt?

Đây là phần quan trọng nhất, vì cue card yêu cầu bạn “explain why it’s a special cake”.

Đừng chỉ nói: “It was delicious so it was special”.

Hãy mở rộng thêm về:

I received this cake on my 18th birthday, which took place in June last year. The timing was perfect because I had just finished my high school graduation exams. At that point in my life, I was feeling really exhausted and quite stressed about my results, so this cake came at exactly the right time.

The celebration took place in the living room of my house. It was just a simple family dinner at first, and I honestly thought we wouldn’t do anything special that night. After we finished eating, the lights were suddenly turned off, and I heard my favourite song playing from the speaker. Then my close friends walked in, holding a cake and singing “Happy Birthday” at the top of their lungs. I was completely shocked and didn’t know what to say.

I got the cake from my group of close friends from high school. We had been in the same class for three years, so we were really attached to each other. They are all very caring and supportive people, and they had secretly planned this surprise with my parents.

The cake itself was not very big, but it was really meaningful. It was a homemade chocolate cake with white frosting and some strawberries on top. There was also a message written in chocolate that said, “We believe in you”. This cake is special to me because it wasn’t just about the taste, but about the love and encouragement behind it. Whenever I feel stressed about studying, I think back to that moment and it gives me more motivation.

I’d like to talk about a special cake I received at a time when I really needed some comfort. This happened about a year ago, right after I got the results of an important midterm exam at university. Unfortunately, I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped, and I remember feeling really disappointed and blaming myself a lot.

That evening, I was staying alone in my dorm room, just scrolling on my phone and trying to forget about the exam. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. When I opened it, my closest friend was standing there with a small box. She walked in without saying much, put the box on my desk, and told me to open it.

Inside was a tiny round cake with a very simple design. On the top, instead of the usual “Happy Birthday” message, it said “It’s just one exam” in pink icing, with a funny little sad face drawn next to it. My friend knows I love sweet things but hate anything too fancy, so she had deliberately chosen a cute, minimal cake for me.

This cake is special to me because it reminded me that grades are not everything. At that low point, what I needed most was not advice, but someone who understood how I felt. The cake, and especially the message on it, made me laugh and cry at the same time. It helped me let go of some of the pressure I was putting on myself, and it reminded me that I have people around me who truly care.

Why do people like celebrating special occasions with cakes?

I think cakes have become a symbol of celebration in many cultures. They’re sweet, colourful and easy to share, so they create a warm and joyful atmosphere. Blowing out candles and making a wish is also a fun little ritual that people, especially children, really enjoy. More importantly, preparing or choosing a cake shows that someone has put time and effort into the occasion, which makes the event feel more meaningful.
