Ứng dụng Grammar vào Speaking – Unit 14: Globalization (Ngữ pháp: Conditionals)

I. Luyện nói Part 1

1. What products do you use that were not made in your country?

made in Vietnam: sản xuất tại Việt Nam

ability (n): khả năng

produce (v): sản xuất

high-tech products: sản phẩm công nghệ cao

Actually, Vietnamese people, in general, use a lot of imported goods from other countries, and I’m not an exception. For example, I often order clothes from China or Korea because they are cheaper and more fashionable at the same time. Besides, none of my technological devices are made in Vietnam, probably because Vietnamese companies haven’t got the ability to produce such high-tech products

2. Would you ever leave your country for better wages somewhere else?

Từ vựng gợi ý:

wage (n): tiền lương

represent (v): đại diện

to be offered sth: được đề nghị (ví dụ: một công việc)

a well-paid job: công việc được trả lương cao

an unstable society: xã hội bất ổn

turn sth down: từ chối

a high-paying job: công việc lương cao

a peaceful country: đất nước yên bình

give it some thought: suy nghĩ thêm

It’s really hard to tell because wages cannot represent everything. If I am offered a well-paid job in an unstable society like the Middle East or the US, I will definitely turn it down. But if there’s a high-paying job in such peaceful countries as Switzerland or Finland, I’ll give it some thought.

3. Do you prefer foreign food or your own country’s cuisine?

Từ vựng gợi ý:

daily consumption: tiêu thụ, ăn uống hàng ngày

lean towards sth: ưu tiên

local food: thức ăn địa phương

affordable (adj): giá cả phải chăng

balanced (adj): cân đối

nutrition (n): chất dinh dưỡng

throw a special party: tổ chức một bữa tiệc đặc biệt

anniversary (n): dịp kỷ niệm

opt for: lựa chọn

Western or Korean delicacies: các món ngon phương Tây hoặc Hàn Quốc

Based on the particular situation, I might choose either one or the other. If it’s for daily consumption, I will lean towards local food because it is more affordable and more balanced in terms of nutrition, I guess. But if I were gonna throw a special party, like on anniversaries, I would opt for Western or Korean delicacies for a change.

II. Luyện nói Part 3:

1. How has globalization affected your country?

Từ vựng gợi ý:

improvement (n): sự cải thiện

standard of living: mức sống

urban area: khu thành thị

countless (adj): vô số

buildings and constructions: các tòa nhà và các công trình xây dựng

a foreign investor: nhà đầu tư nước ngoài

elevated railway: đường sắt trên cao

to name but a few: chỉ mới kể một số mà thôi

There are so many benefits globalization has brought to Vietnam that it’s hard to single out the most significant one. But if I had to choose, I’d go with the improvements in the Vietnamese’s standard of living, especially in urban areas. Let’s take Ha Noi as an example. If you go around the city, you can see countless buildings and constructions that belong to foreign investors. There are Lotte Tower and Lotte Mart by the Koreans, AEON Malls by the Japanese or the elevated railway by the Chinese, to name but a few. If those projects hadn’t been carried out, not only would the citizens feel less comfortable but the economy as a whole would also not be like how it is today.

2. Do you think globalization is a positive or negative thing?

Từ vựng gợi ý:

get mixed feelings about sth: có cảm xúc lẫn lộn

(On the one hand) – in terms of sth: về cái gì

well-being (n): hạnh phúc và sức khỏe

positive (adj): tích cực

different parts of the world: các nơi khác nhau trên thế giới

connected (adj): kết nối

technological advancement: sự tiến bộ trong công nghệ

be easily shared: được chia sẻ một cách dễ dàng

(On the other hand) – ethnic minorities: các dân tộc thiểu số

lose one’s traditions and customs: mất đi truyền thống và phong tục

be overly exposed to sth: tiếp xúc quá nhiều với

influential culture: nền văn hóa có sức ảnh hưởng lớn

I’ve got mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, if we’re talking about changes in terms of well-being, I think there’s no doubt that globalization is a positive thing. As different parts of the world are connected to each other, any technological advancement can be easily shared so that everyone has a better life. On the other hand, some ethnic minorities will be likely to lose their traditions and customs if they are overly exposed to influential cultures like America or Korea.
